“Exaltation is our goal; discipleship is our journey.” President Uchtdorf

Ciao ciao,

This week I read ‘It Works Wonderfully’ by President Uchtdorf and there was one particular part I really liked towards the end: “Exaltation is our goal; discipleship is our journey.
“As you exercise a little faith and begin your walk as a peaceable follower of our Lord Jesus Christ, your heart will change. Your whole being will be filled with light.
“God will help you become something greater than you ever thought possible. And you will discover that the gospel of Jesus Christ is indeed working in your life. It works.” I always love reading about how as a follower of Christ we can use the enabling power of the Atonement to do things we never though possible and the become someone greater than we could ever imagine. The steps are simple, to have faith and trust that your actions are according to his will, but they always seem to be hard. It’s not easy to follow Christ, it was never easy nor will it ever be easy because the right things to do aren’t. If it was, we’d have a lot more good in the world, but when we do make these right choices and follow our saviour, the outcome is always the best and it’s oh so worth it!

There was another talk I read called ‘The Greatest Leaders Are the Greatest Followers’ by Stephen W. Owen in preparation for a lesson on teaching and learning in the church. There was one particular point that I really liked: “regardless of your calling, you are always a leader, and you are always a follower. Leadership is an expression of discipleship–it is simply a matter of helping others come unto Christ, which is what true disciples do. If you are striving to be a follower of Christ, then you can help others follow Him and you can be a leader.” As a humble junior companion I couldn’t agree more! We are always being an example, everyone who has ever laid eyes on us has noticed something about us. When we smile at someone, we are sharing our light, the light which is Christ given. It doesn’t matter where we are serving, or even if we are just sustaining someone, our actions matter and they contribute to our capacity as a follower and a leader.  When we fully appreciate what it means to follow, we can lead others more effectively and vice versa.

Miracles are happening and hearts are changing. Y was baptised on Saturday and confirmed yesterday! I’m just so inspired by the choice converts make to be baptised; when they’re the only one particularly, their courage is outstanding. I’m just so grateful to be on their journey with them, and to support and strengthen them; missionary work isn’t about the place or the time, it’s about the special children of God that our Heavenly Father puts in our path. They’re the ones that make it all worth it. The abuse, the cold nights, the frustrations: all worth it to help bring a child of God one step closer to Him.

To change the subject a little, we made a lasagne this week and it was divine. Oh my goodness, lasagne is just my favourite Italian dish!!! Well, we were all over the world with food this week as we also had a curry and fajitas. Food is just the best! Since living in Italy for un bel po’ di tempo, my appreciation for flavour has sky rocketed; its not so much about the type of food, it’s all about the right seasoning, it makes or breaks a dish!

Music is one of the best parts of Christmas, and we went carolling with the GANS (YSA) after Y’s baptism in piazza del popolo and it was so much fun! Music is one of the greatest ways to bring joy into someone’s life!

So being in such a diverse ward, we have translation and yesterday was the day I did it for the first time after avoiding it for so long. But it went really well, I translated for an hour in Young Women’s from English to Italian, and it was really cool to say the young women theme in both Italian and English! And to bear my testimony at the end, even if it was a sentence in English and then in Italian! I felt the gift of tongues work with me and at times I felt like I didn’t really have to think it through! I’m so blessed to learn a beautiful language!

Today we went ice skating, it was so much fun even if I did fall on my butt….! #typicalme

Have a great week

It’s not about me, it’s not about us.
